Bolt The Footballer To Raise Minimum $44m For Jamaican Youth
Usain Bolt will finally experience his dream – to play football at Old Trafford, but in doing so, the Olympic great will also ensure that the dreams of scores of Jamaican children will also be realised.
The retired sprinter will raise a minimum of £250,000 ($44 million) through a football match on June 10, four days before the start of the World Cup.
Bolt, who teased a day earlier that he had signed for a football team, on Tuesday, announced that he will be playing his first official match as a football player at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
The lifelong Manchester United fan will captain a Soccer Aid World XI that will go up against a Robbie Williams select team, featuring a number of top names.
Bolt, who hung up his spikes after last year’s World Championships in London after a stellar career that saw him win eight Olympic medals and break world records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m as part of Jamaica’s team, said he was thrilled to be able to give back in such a meaningful way, while realising a dream of his own.
“This is a win-win, not only will I be playing at Old Trafford and doing something that I have always dreamt of doing, but I will also be ensuring that the dreams of many young Jamaicans will be met through this partnership with Soccer Aid and UNICEF,” Bolt told The Gleaner.
Through the arrangement, UNICEF’s local arm will receive a minimum of £250,000 ($44 million) for a charity which is to be determined.
Bolt, who has made no secret about his love for football and his intention to play the sport at the highest level, is also set to train with German club Borussia Dortmund in the coming weeks.
