Digest: What Is The Saddest Truth About Smart People?

Julian Frank answered on Quora:

Intelligent people tend to have fewer friends.

This is largely because of how perceptive smart people are.

For the most part, intelligent people see the truth about many friendships: they just aren’t worth the time and effort.

They determine which friends are good, and value those, but don’t bother with attempting to become well-liked or popular.

They see that many relationships are shallow interactions that will bring no real good to either party involved.

Plus, they don’t need to prove their worth to anyone. They know their abilities and don’t need everybody else to recognize them.

So instead of taking part in drama, in forced conversations, in catching up on the lives of others, intelligent people sit back and observe.

They watch what other people do, and learn from it. They better their decision making based on the mistakes others have made and further their knowledge through what others have learned.

Because of all of these things, many intelligent people become isolated.

Because they don’t tend to socialize. Because they keep to themselves. Because their abilities are incongruous with those of many around them.

Because they’re different.

In the end, the saddest truth about intelligent people is that they tend to be relatively alone. And regardless of the fact that it may bring positive things in the future, it can still be a horrible feeling to be alone.
