South Australia Urges For More Migrants To Boost Population Growth

South Australian Government has said it is lobbying the federal government to grant it a “preferred migrant status’’ to address its stalling population growth.

Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall revealed this on Wednesday, calling for a greater share of the country’s migrant intake to be given to the state.

“At the moment in Australia we have got a two-speed economy in terms of population,” Marshall said.  “You have got some places which are struggling with massive population increases and you have got other parts of the country which have got very, very low population growth.

“We would ultimately like to negotiate a preferential migration status for South Australia, especially around increasing regional population and international students,’’ he stressed.

South Australia has the slowest population rise of any mainland state since 2012, with a net interstate migration loss of 23,000 people.
