After 30 Years, Somali University Produce First graduates
In more than three decades, the Somali National University held its first graduation ceremony. After the breakout of civil war and unrest, the university, based in the capital, Mogadishu, was shut down in the early 1990s. In 2014, it reopened.
In 2014, the university received only 550 students, but in 2018 the number increased to 5,070. During Monday's ceremony, more than 130 graduates received degree certificates. Meanwhile, many students voiced concerns about safety issue.
For fresh graduate Yusra Osman Sharif, the fear of militant group al-Shabab was originally a major barrier.
