Kenya: One Country, Two Presidents
"I, Raila Omolo Odinga, do swear that I will protect the nation as people's president, so help me God," These were words of opposition leader Raila Odinga as he was sworn in as President at a mock inauguration ceremony on Tuesday in protest against President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The opposition party insists that the ceremony takes place on Tuesday after previous efforts to swear in Odinga last month was postponed by himself (Odinga).
It could be recalled that in November last year Kenyatta won a second presidential term with 98% of the vote following a controversial election rerun. The country’s Supreme Court nullified the previous ballot, also won by Kenyatta due to election irregularities and malpractices.
While, Odinga and his opposition party dropped out of the second vote, claiming the election commission had failed to implement necessary reforms.
