FG Set To Reform Doctorate Calendar

The federal government is planning to review academic calendar for award of doctoral degrees in universities across the country.

According to the National Universities Commission (NUC) which is planning the review, it is aimed at pegging a given calendar expected for the programme.

Executive Secretary of the NUC Prof. Abubakar Rasheed noted this at a workshop organised by the commission on proposed higher education reform and impact of African Centers of Excellence.

Further reports suggest the review became necessary due to delay by universities to let scholars pursuing the programmes go.

The Executive Secretary mentioned that the review was part of the recommendation made by the National Higher Education Reform Committee.

Professor Rasheed lamented a situation where scholars spend 10-15years before obtaining Doctoral Degrees.

According to him, this has negative impact on the nation as the academic community is a critical stakeholder in the country.

He noted that the country would double her population in the next 30 years and thus universities need to plan ahead and produce graduates who would be relevant to the nation’s development.
