For Scoring Low In UTME, Teen Commits Suicide

A teenage girl has allegedly committed suicide in Ekiugbo, Ughelli North of Delta State, following low scores in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Simply identified as Loveth, she was said to have been displeased that the 163 she scored is inadequate for her to study Medicine in the university.

Loveth was found dead yesterday morning in her home.

The Nation gathered that the deceased was suspected to have taken three bottles of a dangerous insecticide, known as Sniper.

According to sources, Loveth had gone to check her result on Tuesday, and discovered that she scored far lower than she expected.

The 18-year old was said to have left the result centre distraught and weeping profusely.

A relative of the deceased, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said her parents, who still believed their daughter could still be revived, made last minute efforts to save her life.

“She was said to have scored about 163 in the JAMB exam. When she got home from where she had gone to check her result, her father told her that the score was too low to study Medicine. The father even assured her that she could get admission with the result into a polytechnic.

“After the discussion with her father, she was said to have left for her mother’s shop, which is some few metres away and secretly collected the three bottles of Sniper to drink. She drank all three bottles found in her room.

“According to what her parents told us, she didn’t show any form of premonition that she was going to kill herself. When she was not seen in the sitting room, they went to check her in her room but she was dead. Nobody knows why she killed herself ,” the family source explained.

* Medicine isn't the only course one could study in order to succeed in life or earn prestige in the society. Students mostly aspire to study professional courses or 'prestigious courses' as such ends up exacting so much anxiety, some leading to 'do or die' syndrome. Guardians and teachers must counsel these young people  properly on career choice.
