UN Urges Nigeria To Relax Law On Cannabis
The United Nations on Monday urged the Nigerian government to relax its laws on cannabis consumption.
The UN, pointing to the fact it has approved the use of the drug for medical purposes, said nations have to decriminalise drug users, especially sick people who use the drug for treatment, care and rehabilitation.
This is according to Harsheth Kaur Virk, the Project Officer of the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes in Nigeria.
Speaking during her presentation at a one-day public hearing on the need to check the menace of pharmaceutical drugs abuse among youths in Nigeria, she said, “the Drugs and Crime Office of the UN sees addictive drugs users as people who are sick and in need of treatment, care and rehabilitation”.
Virk said the UN position is not a support for recreational use but for for medicinal purposes.
The public hearing was organised by the Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Health.
