Nigeria Cancer Society Cautions Public Against Fatty Foods

The Nigeria Cancer Society on Monday advised the public to avoid fatty foods and concentrate on diet rich in fibre to enhance healthy living.

Malam Murtala Aliyu, Secretary, Gombe State Chapter of the society, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe.

He advised that people should concentrate on vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, fruits, potatoes and cereal.

According to him, the most common cancer affecting people in recent times are breast, cervical, prostate and liver cancers.

The scribe described fear as a major factor preventing people from going for cancer screening.

Aliyu said that early detection was the only answer to effective treatment and management of the disease.

“I am calling on the general public to conquer fear and go for screening; early detection will pave a way for effective treatment and management,” he said.

He said that the association did not commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day on Feb. 4 in the state due to logistics problem.

“But we commemorated the day much later, with support from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

“During the commemoration, we conducted free screening for prostate, cervical, liver and breast cancers,” he said.
