The Cuban ambassador to Zambia, Nelson Pages Vilas, has been told to leave the country in seven days.
The Zambian government served him the ejection notice after he was seen at the launch of opposition Socialist Party, headed by Fred M’membe, a journalist-turned-politician.
The order was given on Sunday by Zambian President Edgar Lungu and was confirmed by the foreign affairs minister, Joe Malanji.
The government argues his presence was wrong and very much against diplomatic etiquette.
Malanji said a remorseful Vilas attended a meeting with the ministry but would have to leave.
Melanji further said it is believed that the move would not sour relations with Cuba.
