Europa League: Arsene Wenger's Hope Of Signing Off With A First European Trophy At Arsenal Dashed By Atletico
Arsene Wenger |
Atletico Madrid have ended Arsenal’s last hope of returning to Champions League football after they edged the Gunners 2-1 over two legs in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
The result also means departing manager Arsene Wenger will not get a glorious farewell.
The Frenchman, who will leave the Gunners at the end of the season after 22 years in charge - never won a European trophy with the club.
Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa’s composed chip on the brink of half-time dashed the north London club’s European hopes.
The Spanish side, who are two-time winners of this competition, will now face French club Olympic Marseille in Lyon on 16 May.
It will be Atletico’s third Europa League final in eight years.
