Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini Heads To Libya Amid Migrant Crisis

Matteo Salvini

Italy's far-right interior minister, Matteo Salvini, has travelled to Libya for talks on the migration crisis - after Italy began turning away boats full of migrants rescued off North Africa.

Mr Salvini - who took office earlier this month - wants migrants trying to travel to Europe to be processed at centres in northern Africa, which would require international rules to be rewritten.

He's urged rescue charities to stop helping those attempting to make the dangerous Mediterranean crossing.

Libya's navy says it rescued nearly 1,000 migrants in distress over the weekend.
