Cristiano Ronaldo produced one of the great World Cup performances as his dramatic late free-kick earned Portugal a draw with Spain in a classic encounter yesterday in Sochi, Russia.
The Portugal captain put his side ahead with an early penalty and restored their lead just before half-time.
Diego Costa had twice equalised with well-taken goals, with Nacho’s majestic goal appearing to have won it for the former world champions.
But Ronaldo stepped up to fire into the top-right corner with two minutes remaining to secure the draw in Sochi.
Fernando Hierro, who took over from Julen Lopetegui, was seemingly heading for a winning start to his reign until Ronaldo once again grabbed all the headlines.
