Nigeria Beat SA To Defend AWCON Title

Nigeria have won the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) title for a record ninth time after beating South Africa 4-3 on penalties on Saturday in Accra, Ghana.

It was a ding-dong affair as both sides ended normal and extra-time without a goal before the ensuing shootout.

The Super Falcons, who had qualified for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup by reaching this stage of the competition, retained the trophy for the third time on the bounce.

In the third-placed match, Cameroon mauled Mali 4-2 and will now join Nigeria and South Africa as Africa’s representatives at next year’s global showpiece in France.
