6 Killed In Ghana As Goldmine Tunnel Roof Collapsed

Six people were killed on Saturday when a tunnel roof collapsed at one of Newmont's gold mining sites in Ghana, the company confirmed to local media on Sunday.

The tragedy happened following the collapse of the reclaim tunnel roof at the mining company's Ahafo Mill Expansion project, located some 307 km northwest of Accra.

The dead were workers of Consar Company Limited, a firm contracted to construct the reclaim tunnel roof.

"The entire Newmont family is devastated by this tragic accident and our priority is to provide support to the families, friends and co-workers of the deceased," Alwyn Pretorius, the company's vice president in Africa, said in a statement.

“All other employees working in the area have been safely relocated and the scene of the accident has been secured.

“The police are on site and the appropriate government and regulatory agencies have been notified, including the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission.” He added.

Newmont is a US-owned mining company, and one of the world’s largest gold producers.
