The Federal Government of Nigeria plans to commence the partial commercialisation of River Basin Development Authorities in the country by 2019.

The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, stated this at the investiture of the 10th President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering in Lagos on Thursday, adding that the National Council on Privatisation had approved the appointment of a transaction adviser to guide the process.

Adamu, who was represented at the investiture by the Director-General, National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna, Dr Emmanuel Adanu, said the commercialisation would help the RBDAs to reach their full potential.

“The RBDAs are undergoing structural reforms towards partial and eventual full commercialisation of their operations. The National Council on Privatisation has approved the appointment of a transaction adviser to guide the process. We envisage the commencement of their partial commercialisation by 2019,” he stated.

According to the minister, in the last two and half years, there have been steps to revitalise the RBDAs, which were established to boost agricultural production in the country, through all year-round farming to guarantee the country’s food security and achieve integrated rural development.
