NIPOST, Indian Post To Build Greater Bilateral Cooperation In Postal Services – Postmaster-General

Postmaster-General, Nigeria Postal Services, Bisi Adegbuyi, says that the organisation will build greater bilateral cooperation with India in postal services.

Adegbuyi disclosed this when the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bien Reddy, paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the visit had many potential benefits for NIPOST in terms of leveraging on existing opportunities between the two postal services.

“As you know India has a reputation for innovations in technology and ICT, and the 21st century postal administration will necessarily have to deploy new technologies and be innovative.

“This is a welcome development because we are diversifying our product offerings in Nigeria, particularly in areas of financial services, like the electronic money order, which is working well in India.

“We have just agreed that it will be important to send some of our staff in the financial services department to India for capacity building.

Adegbuyi said there were plans to release a postal stamp in the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi of India because he was an international hero.

“Don’t forget that Mahatma Gandhi is an international hero and an apostle of non-violence in agitation, which we also preach in Nigeria.

“The important thing about this is that we are using the instrumentality of post in Nigeria to immortalise somebody, who is worthy of being celebrated, owing to his contributions to world peace.

Earlier, Reddy said the objective of the visit was to look at the possibility of greater cooperation between NIPOST and Indian Post, as the largest network in the south.

“So, there are many areas I think there can be collaboration, even as Nigeria and India are both members of the Universal Postal Union and the postmasters of our two countries do collaborate.

“Bilateral capacity building programmes, we have areas where the government of India is sponsoring short training programmes for improving the capacities of various areas, which are supporting the main departments.

“My country is offering Nigeria the opportunity for its staff to benefit from the training, to improve their capacities,’’ he said.
