Shell May Face Charges In The Netherlands In Connection With Nigerian Oil Deal

Royal Dutch Shell, the oil and gas giant, faces prosecution in the Netherlands over its Nigerian activities.

The company has been told that the Netherlands Public Prosecutor's Office is preparing to prosecute the company for its role in securing the license to explore an offshore oilfield, OPL 245, which is believed to have reserves worth $ 500 billion (£ 375 billion).

Shell told shareholders that the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office is approaching the conclusion of an investigation and is preparing to prosecute the company for criminal charges "directly or indirectly related to the 2011 settlement of Oil Prospecting License 245 disputes in Nigeria."

Shell, along with its project partner Eni, is already facing fraud charges in a court in Italy in a case that centres around how $ 1.1 billion was paid to secure drilling rights.

The energy giants of Italy and the Anglo - Dutch deny any wrongdoing.

Anti - corruption campaigners estimate that the alleged fraud in lost revenue cost Nigeria nearly $ 6 billion.
