A cap on international phone calls within the European Union (EU) has been introduced by the European Commission. The price control will apply from May 15 to all 28 members and is expected to be rolled out in Iceland, Norway and Lichtenstein in the near future.

Calls within the EU will be limited to 19 cents per minute and SMS will be limited to 6 cents per message, VAT excluded.

The measures were agreed last year as part of a review by the European Parliament of EU telecommunications rules and pushed for them. The caps are designed to help reduce the gap between EU domestic and international calls costs that vary across the bloc's various telecommunications operators.

The introduction of price caps comes after the EU abolished roaming charges for European mobile users in 2017.

“European consumers are now comprehensively covered against bill shocks when calling any European number, both at home and abroad,” said Mariya Gabriel, EU digital commissioner.
