Tennis: Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova Wins Third Madrid Open Title
Petra Kvitova |
Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova outlasted her Dutch opponent Kiki Bertens to win a record third Madrid Open title.
The Czech world number 10, who also won last week in Prague, finally triumphed 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-3 in two hours and 52 minutes.
Kvitova, the victor in Spain in 2011 and 2015, becomes the first woman to win the tournament three times.
But she was made to work hard by the world number 20 before extending her winning run to 11 matches.
Bertens beat world number two Caroline Wozniacki and five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova on the way to the final and will now move her above her previous career-high ranking of 18.
